Vandaag is het precies 96 jaar geleden dat een van de grootste literaire cultfiguren zijn intrede deed in de wereld. Jack Kerouac. Stichter van de vonk die de Beatgeneratie werd, aanbidder van geestdrift en allround-zwerver. Er hangt een sluier van waarheid om hem heen dat hem in zekere zin onaantastbaar maakt. Een waarheid die in de naoorlogse jaren hard nodig was als tegenreactie op de sobere en verstikkende burgerlijke realiteit. Iets dat vandaag de dag relevanter lijkt te zijn dan ooit. Vandaar deze ode aan Jack Kerouac.
Wie was Jack Kerouac?
Jack Kerouac is vooral bekend geworden om zijn boek On The Road. Niet geheel verrassend is de naam van dit blog ontleend aan dit befaamde werk der literatuur. Het is namelijk een boek dat tot in de grond van het Zijn probeert te komen, en dat ook op wonderlijke wijze doet. In de autobiografische roman beschrijft Kerouac de odyssee die hij (Sal Paradise) maakt met zijn reismaat Dean Moriarty (in het echt Neil Cassady). Achteraf legt hij uit over deze trip:
“Dean and I were embarked on a journey through post-Whitman America to FIND that America and to FIND the inherent goodness in American man. It was really a story about 2 Catholic buddies roaming the country in search of God.”
Met een hele generatie pseudo-backpackers vandaag de dag is de roep om gedurfd leven nu noodzakelijker dan ooit. Ooh! Waar zijn toch de Jack Kerouacs van gisterjaar?
De levenslustige gek
Jack Kerouac wist van de donkere zijde van de maan. Dit was echter geen excuus voor nihilisme. Integendeel, het gaf juist een boost aan het ongeremde en onaangepaste bestaan dat hij leefde. Al dan niet samen met Neal Cassady, was Kerouac tijdens zijn leven altijd op zoek naar het antwoord op de vraag waar het allemaal om draait. Zo ging dit vaak gepaard met periodes van solitair ‘soul-searching’. In zijn boek Desolation Angels beschrijft hij zijn ervaringen van het werk dat hij deed als observator op de berg Desolation Peak. Maandenlang leefde hij eenzaam in een hut en afgesloten van de verleidingen van de stad, zoekend naar wat de Boeddhisten noemen ‘directe ervaring’ (Kerouac was het grootste deel van zijn leven zeer gefascineerd door het boeddhisme.). Uiteindelijk gaf hij dit op en besloot weer deel te nemen aan het sociale verkeer. Maar, net zoals hij geïntrigeerd was door het vinden van innerlijke rust, zo was hij eveneens aangetrokken door de levenslustige gekken:
“[…]the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes “Awww!”
